What Is Cutting Board Butter?

Cutting board butter is a food-safe wood conditioner used to protect, hydrate, and seal wooden cutting boards, butcher blocks, and wood kitchen utensils. Despite the name, it contains no dairy — the term refers to its soft, spreadable consistency.

What's In It

A quality cutting board butter is made from food-safe waxes and oils. Hive to Hardwood Cutting Board Butter uses three ingredients: pure beeswax, polymerized walnut oil, and cold-pressed orange peel extract. No petroleum derivatives, no synthetic preservatives, no fragrance, no coconut oil, no mineral oil. The beeswax provides a moisture-resistant seal while the polymerized walnut oil penetrates the wood grain to condition and hydrate from the inside out.

What It Does

Applied regularly, cutting board butter prevents a wood cutting board from drying out, cracking, and warping. It seals the wood against moisture penetration — which is what causes bacteria to harbor in surface cracks — and keeps the grain tight and smooth. It also enhances the natural color and grain of the wood, bringing out the warmth of walnut, maple, and cherry.

Is It Food Safe?

Yes — when made from food-grade ingredients. Beeswax is FDA-recognized as food safe. Polymerized walnut oil is a food-safe drying oil. Cold-pressed orange peel extract is a natural plant-based ingredient. Hive to Hardwood Cutting Board Butter contains no petroleum, no mineral oil, and no synthetic additives. Note: contains walnut oil — consult a medical professional before use if you have a tree nut allergy.

How Often to Use It

Apply cutting board butter when the board looks dry, feels rough, or after heavy use. For most home kitchens, once a month is sufficient. New boards should be conditioned 2–3 times before first use to fully seal the grain. Shop Hive to Hardwood Cutting Board Butter →
